Erykah Badu is one of my favorite artists of all-time.
Her musical sound is a perfect balance of classic and experimental, from her unmatchable throwback jazz vocal style to her solid, groovy yet unique production. Her music has so much depth on just a sonic level, before you even notice the words:
Calling her lyrics “conscious” is an understatement. Her songs talk about all sorts of social and political issues that face people of color, women, poor people, and humans in general. And on top of that she can still keep it fun and laid-back. Plus you can’t forget all her references to the Nation of Gods and Earths.
"If we were made in his image then call us by our name, most intellects do not believe in Gods but they fear us just the same"
"love yourself entirely enough so no person can ever try to convince you otherwise. you have the right to do that, i promise."
"It used to be about trying to do something. Now it’s about trying to be someone."
"Falling in love with yourself first doesn’t make you vain or selfish, it makes you indestructible."
"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world."
if you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out.
if you put a frog in warm water and gradually turn up the heat until the water is boiling, the frog will remain there until it dies.
and that is an abusive relationship.
